Memorial Day always marks the beginning of Summer where I’m from. I picture long weekends by the pool, block parties, and cookouts with my family. I think every family tradition or gathering has a pattern based on the dynamics of your family. Who runs the kitchen, who’s watching baseball and ignoring everyone, who is starting political arguments and chopping the veggies wrong? I love those little details, so that’s what we’ll write about today.

Write about a family gathering. Focus on the details and sequence of events. Who always arrives first? Who’s always late? Are there politics to who grills the meat or sits in what chair? Flex your descriptive language muscles and paint a vivid picture of the family, their dynamics, and the event. Whether this is based on reality or not is between you and your therapist. Have fun!

Grab an iced cold beverage, put on some sunny music and 10 minutes on the clock, and write!!
