Prompt #6

**~Auld Lang Syne~**

Pop champagne, it’s my favorite weekend of the year!! I eat seafood with my family and clear out my email inbox in my PJ’s! I hope you, too, are living your bliss. Today’s prompt is a setpiece exercise in keeping with the vibe of the weekend! Go BIG or, quite literally, go home!! Have fun with it.

(Here are some explainers if you want background on the mechanics of a setpiece in your medium-links for film, tv, novels and comedy) Ok, here’s the prompt.

Write about a blow-out New Year’s Eve party. Whether it starts small and goes off the rails, or it starts huge then crashes and burns, it needs to be whatever your idea of a “Big and crazy” party is. My first instinct is the New Year’s Eve Penthouse Party in The OC, which frankly is NOT big enough so think BIGGER. Here are some guidelines.

  1. There has to be a shift in the vibe of the event. For example, from quiet to raucous, raging to desolate, chic to ratchet, whatever you want.

  2. Two people at the party have to hate each other, or be angry with one another.

  3. Those two people must cross paths at some point.

  4. Something must go wrong at the party.

In my heart of hearts, you get into a flow state with this and write for longer than 10 minutes, but of course, if 10 minutes is all you got, just do that! You can pick this up later if you’re having fun with it. Grab a glass o’ bubbly. Set your timer! Write!

I’m watching When Harry Met Sally and notion tutorials.

I’m reading a piece on the Dialectics of Barbie from earlier this year.

I’m listening to Black Bon Iver/Sufjan, Mon RovÎa.

How did it go? I’d love to know what you chose as ~the thing that goes wrong~ at your party! Let me know in the comments. See ya next year!
